Soprano Chelsea Basler returns to Sarasota Opera as a Studio Artist this season singing the roles of Guardian of the Dawn/Mother's Voice in the world premiere of Little Nemo in Slumberland and the role of Curley's Wife in Carlisle Floyd's Of Mice and Men.
Ms. Basler maintains an active performance schedule as a featured soloist in opera, operetta, and oratorio. From January to March 2012, Ms. Basler was an Apprentice Artist with Sarasota Opera. She covered the role of Magda in Puccini's La Rondine with Des Moines Metro Opera this past summer. Chelsea is a recent alum of the Boston University Opera Institute, where she sang the role of Cora in Stephen Paulus' The Postman Always Rings Twice, Juliette in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette, Susannah (Susannah), Fiordiligi (Così fan Tutte), Antigone (Antigone), Girl (Trouble in Tahiti), and Suzanne Michaud (Therese Raquin). Ms. Basler was heard recently at the Ohio Light Opera Company singing Sylva in Gypsy Princess and Marshina in Kismet. Past credits with OLO include Laula (L’Etoile), Margot (Desert Song), Helene (La Belle Helene) and Annina (A Night in Venice).
Ms. Basler won first place in the 2011 Peter Elvins Vocal Competition. She was also a 2011 winner of the Kahn Career Entry Award at Boston University and she was selected as a finalist in the Charles Lyman Vocal Competition in 2007.
