Mezzo soprano Heather Johnson, hailed by Opera News as "a dramatic singer in the truest sense", has received critical acclaim for her work on both the opera and concert stage.

Ms. Johnson returns to Sarasota Opera for her fifth season having appeared in several leading roles such as Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, Angiolina in La Cenerentola, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel and her debut as Beppe in the 2009 production of L’amico Fritz

Hailed by Opera News as "a dramatic singer in the truest sense", Ms. Johnson joined the Metropolitan Opera company roster making her company debut in the 2011 Summer Recital Series.  Last October she sang the role of Rosina in Opera Southwest's production of Il barbiere di Siviglia and returned to the Metropolitan Opera for their production of The Enchanted Island.  Other engagements during the 2011-12 season included Mahler's Symphony no. 2 with the St. Olaf Choir and Orchestra and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with PORT Opera.

Recent and upcoming performances include Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Boston Lyric Opera; the title role in Carmen in Rostock; her Italian debut in Rome singing Rossini’s Stabat Mater, broadcast on RAI 1; Dido in Dido and Aeneas on Martha’s Vineyard and oratorio concerts with the Choral Society of Durham, the Washington Chorus and the New York Choral Society.  She made her New York City Opera debut in 2004 singing the role of Soraya in the world premiere of Charles Wuorinen's Haroun and the Sea of Stories, returning to that company to sing Meg Page in Falstaff. Mercedes in Carmen, Kate in The Pirates of Penzance, Lucienne in Die tote Stadt and Flora in La traviata.

For Opera Orchestra of New York at Carnegie Hall, Ms. Johnson made her debut in Der Freischutz and returned to sing Hedwige in Rossini's Guillaume Tell and Mallika in Lakmé. She also sang Mozart's Mass in C Minor wih the New York Choral Society also at Carnegie Hall. Recent performances include the Mozart Requiem with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, the world premiere arrangement of Grieg's song cycle Haugtussa with the Stillwater Music Festival and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with Madison Opera and Opera Pacific.

Among the opera companies and orchestras with which Ms. Johnson has appeared are Glimmerglass Opera, Minnesota Opera, Boston Pops Orchestra, EOS Orchestra, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Nashville Opera, Opera Lafayette, Portland Opera Repertory Theater, the New Hampshire Music Festival and the Midcoast Symphony.
