Young people age 8 and up now have the opportunity to participate in Sarasota Youth Opera’s twenty-fifth year. Enrollment is currently open for the spring session, which begins in January. A highlight of this special season will be a March concert on the stage of Sarasota Opera House where Youth Opera members will be joined by artists from the Sarasota Opera’s Winter Festival and accompanied by the Sarasota Opera Orchestra.
Youth Opera singers also perform in outreach concerts throughout the community as well as at Sarasota Opera. Members also have the annual opportunity to audition for children’s roles in Sarasota Opera’s mainstage productions. For instance, this year twelve young singers were chosen to perform roles in Tosca, which opens the Winter Festival Opera Season.
The program admits all who apply, regardless of skill level, and provides vocal and acting training. Tuition for the program is $150 per session. Partial payments can be arranged and there are a limited number of scholarships available. The Spring Session begins in early January and ends in mid May.
Placement classes for singers who plan to join will be held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, January 7, 8, and 9. The program is open to all young people age 8 (or who entered third grade in 2008). These classes are important and students who are interested in participating must attend the first session on January 7. At that time they will schedule a short, personal session on either January 8 or 9. The sessions are held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Singers do not need to prepare a song for the placement exercise. A parents meeting will be held on January 7 at 6;30 p.m.
