Countless Performance Opportunities Available to Singers During 2009-2010 Season

July 13, 2009

As Sarasota Youth Opera enters its twenty-sixth year, countless performance opportunities will be available to its members throughout the 2009-2010 season.
Young people age 8 and up may enroll now in what is the most comprehensive program in the U.S. to introduce and involve young people in the performance of opera.
During the fall and winter, Youth Opera will perform in outreach concerts throughout the community as well as at Sarasota Opera. And this year, singers will be eligible to audition for 42 singing and 12 non-singing children’s roles in Sarasota Opera’s Winter Opera Festival. Last year twelve young singers performed in Tosca.
In May, all members of Sarasota Youth Opera will perform in a fully staged opera with orchestra, Judith Weir’s The Black Spider, on the stage of the William E. Schmidt Opera Theater in the Sarasota Opera House.
Sarasota Youth Opera admits all who apply, regardless of skill level, providing vocal and acting training. Tuition is $150 per session. Partial payments can be arranged and there are a limited number of scholarships available. The Fall Session begins in August and the Spring Session begins in early January and ends in mid May.
Placement classes for singers who plan to join will be held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, August 26, 27, and 28. These classes are important and students who are interested in participating must attend the first session on August 26. At the first session, prospective members will meet Music Director Lance Inouye, be part of warm-ups and an open rehearsal, get a tour of the theater and backstage, and be treated to a pizza party. A parent meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m. Also at the August 26 class, singers will schedule a short, personal session on either August 27 or August 28. The sessions are held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Singers do not need to prepare a song for the placement exercise.
