The National Endowment for the Arts recently awarded $17,500 to Sarasota Opera to mount a new production of the rarely heard Verdi opera Giovanna d’Arco (Joan of Arc) in March 2010.
Verdi achieved early success with this retelling of the French warrior-saint that is rich with stirring choruses, imaginative orchestral writing and an abundance of arching melodies. Sarasota Opera will present six performances of the opera in repertoire as part of the four-opera Winter Festival scheduled for February 6 to March 21.
Giovanna d’Arco is the 26th work in Sarasota Opera’s internationally-acclaimed Verdi Cycle: it is one more component of the multi-decade artistic commitment begun in 1989 by Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi.
