As Sarasota Youth Opera enters its twenty-seventh year, many performance opportunities will be available to its members throughout the 2010-2011 season. Young people ages 8 and up may now join the most comprehensive program in the U.S. to introduce and involve young people in the performance of opera. During fall and winter, Youth Opera will perform in outreach concerts throughout the community as well as at Sarasota Opera. And this year, singers will be eligible to audition for children’s roles in Sarasota Opera’s Winter Opera Festival production of La bohème. In the spring, a group of chorus members will perform at events throughout the community as well as in Disney World® at Disney Magic Music Days®.
Sarasota Youth Opera admits all who apply, regardless of skill level, providing vocal and acting training. Tuition is $150 per session. Partial payments can be arranged and there are a limited number of scholarships available. The Fall Session begins in August and the Spring Session begins in early January and ends in mid May.
Enrollment Night is a fun evening where kids and families meet the music director in a short one-on-one, take a tour of the Opera House, and learn music in a mini-rehearsal. (Singers do not have to prepare a song for this exercise.) There will be a parents meeting to go over specifics of the program, payment schedules, and other information. Prospective members age 8-13 will meet September 9, 6:30-8:30 p.m., ages 14-18 will meet at the same time on September 10. Rehearsals begin the following week.
To sign up for either of the enrollment nights, call (941) 366-8450, ext. 221.
