One of the perks of being a member of Sarasota Youth Opera is the opportunity to audition for children’s roles in Sarasota Opera’s mainstage opera productions. This year, Youth Opera singers who have been chosen to perform in the 2010 Winter Festival production of Puccini’s La bohème are: Alexandra Ladyzensky, Angela Grande, Cami McLean, Deborah Harding, Devin Bradbury, Jackie Stotler, Kelly Hatton, Khaleelah Elhajoui, Olyanna Koniszczuk, and Skyler Goodman. Understudies include: Sophia Masterson, Lexi Hagaman, and Sarah Levison.
Sarasota Youth Opera is open to all young people age 8 and up regardless of skill level and financial situation, providing vocal and acting training. Tuition is $150 per session. Partial payments can be arranged and there are a limited number of scholarships available. Enrollment for the Spring Session, which begins in early January and ends in mid May, is currently being taken.
Enrollment Night is a fun evening where kids and families meet the music director in a short one-on-one, take a tour of the Opera House, and learn music in a mini-rehearsal. (Singers do not have to prepare a song for this exercise.) There will be a parents meeting to go over specifics of the program, payment schedules, and other information. Prospective members age 8-13 will meet January 4, 6:30-8 p.m., ages 14-18 will meet at the same time on January 5. Rehearsals begin the following week. To sign up for either of the enrollment nights, call (941) 366-8450, ext. 545.
