The Sarasota Opera Artists Concert, an annual favorite with local opera patrons, will take place Sunday, March 13 at 8 p.m. Always a highlight of the season, this entertaining concert will feature the Principal and Studio Artists of the 2011 Winter Festival performing popular songs and arias.
Selections will include arias by Puccini, Verdi, Dvořak, Gounod, and Charpentier (“Depuis le jour” from Louise); duets by Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti and Lehàr (Waltz duet from the operetta The Merry Widow performed in German); and the “Card Trio” from Bizet’s Carmen. Pieces will be sung in many languages, including Italian, French, German, Czech, English, and Korean.
Tunes from Broadway (“Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific by Rodgers & Hammerstein) and Hollywood (“The Donkey Serenade” from The Firefly by Rudolf Friml) will also be part of the mix.
Studio Artists under the direction of Maestro Kristen Kemp will sing a medley of selections from the Sigmund Romberg operettas The Desert Song and The New Moon. And members of the Sarasota Opera Orchestra will perform Puccini’s Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums) for string quartet. Puccini reused some of this music in his first great opera, Manon Lescaut.
Tickets, from $15-$40, are available now by calling (941) 328-1300, in-person at the Box Office, or online at www.sarasotaopera.org.
