Each opera season, Sarasota Opera admits 24 young professional singers to its Apprentice Artist program, which is an intensive training ground for singers, with an emphasis on performance. Artists are given numerous and varied performance opportunities.
This year they have sung in the company’s outreach concerts in the community, the noon lobby concerts at the Opera House, and the choruses in Sarasota Opera mainstage productions during the season. With the 2011 Winter Festival nearly complete, it is time for them to bid farewell by performing an end of season concert, Tuesday, March 22 at 8 p.m. Singers will be accompanied by Roger L. Bingaman, Program and Music Director of the Apprentice Artists, at the piano.
Apprentices will perform arias, duets, ensembles, and choruses from Léhar’s The Merry Widow, Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment, Verdi’s Il trovatore, Hoiby’s A Month in the Country, Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann, and more.
Many of the Apprentice Artists return to participate in the Studio Artists program and eventually come back to perform as Principal Artists with Sarasota Opera.
Tickets are $10 and are available now at the Box Office, 61 N. Pineapple Avenue; by phone at (941) 328-1300, or online at www.sarasotaopera.org.
