Sarasota Opera is pleased to announce
The 2011 Opera Trip to San Francisco
September 21 – September 25, 2011
Sarasota, FL—Whether you are new to Opera or a long time patron, all are invited to
join Sarasota Opera in its tradition of exciting Opera Tours to destinations around the
world. This year, the tour will be traveling to San Francisco, California from September
21st through September 25th. In addition to attending exciting productions at San
Francisco Opera, this trip will include 5 Star luxury accommodations at the St. Regis
Hotel, a full day’s tour in wine country, guided tours of the War Memorial Opera
House and San Francisco, as well as exquisite meals. The price per person is $3,100,
$750 of which is a tax deductible donation to Sarasota Opera, and serves as a fantastic
opportunity to meet new friends as well as deepen existing friendships. Opera trips
over the years have generated more than $200,000 in donations to the Sarasota
Opera. Joey Frye, Sarasota Opera Trustee and annual trip attendee says, “Every opera
season, I wait eagerly to learn where the next trip will be. Each trip has been more than
I anticipated. The places, the events, and the people have all given me great memories.
Most of the time I roomed alone but never felt alone.”
Executive Director Susan Danis and Communications Officer Sam Lowry will greet
travelers at the 5 Star St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 21st. A
private welcome dinner will officially kick off this Opera Lover’s weekend that evening at
the famous Tommy Toy’s restaurant featuring world class Chinese cuisine.
San Francisco Opera will be presenting a mixture of classic grand opera with world
premiere commissions. Thursday evening we will attend a performance of Puccini’s
vocally extravagant masterpiece, Turandot. Iréne Theorin will star as the icy princess, a
role she has sung at such prestigious houses such as Covent Garden, Tel Aviv and Tokyo.
Leading international tenor, Marco Berti, will sing the insatiable Calaf intent on melting
the heart of opera’s most famous princess. Saturday, Opera Lover travelers will be
amongst the first to see a performance of the newly commissioned opera Heart of a
Soldier, an emotionally charged true story of war, love, friendship and heroism. This
exciting new work features an operatically star charged cast including baritone Thomas
Hampson and tenor William Burden.
In between performances on Friday, travelers will board our private coach and be
whisked away to Wine Country in Sonoma County. After a morning tour of the grounds
and facilities, we will enjoy a private gourmet luncheon in a true Wine Cave with wines
expertly paired by our hosts. Timing is optimum for our visit as September falls right in
the middle of Harvest Season or “Crush” when the grapes are picked at the height of
freshness.
A private farewell dinner Saturday evening at the St. Regis will allow for patrons to
reflect on our wonderful adventures of the previous four days and bring the curtain
down on our 2011 Opera Weekend in San Francisco.
