Of Mice and Men (sm)Spoken & Sung: Of Mice and Men Education Event

Partner:  The Asolo Conservatory
Saturday, January 28, 2013  5:00pm–7:00pm
William E. Schmidt Opera Theatre

John Steinbeck published his novel Of Mice and Men (along with a stage adaptation) in 1937 and now, is required   reading in many schools and one of the best known works of literature in America.  Famed American opera   composer, Carlisle Floyd, adapted it into an opera in 1969 and the piece is now one of the most performed opera's in the American repertory.  However, many in the Sarasota Opera's audience who attend our upcoming production of the operatic version are likely to be more familiar with the book rather than Carlisle Floyd’s adaptation.

So how do the two compare?  How do they differ?  You have the chance to find out if you attend our innovative Spoken and Sung presentation, 5pm Monday January 28 at the Opera House.

Members of FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training program and Sarasota Opera’s Studio Artists program will team up to perform parallel sections from each work.  This presentation will be a great way to experience elements of both works at the same time: the actors will read excerpts from Steinbeck’s play and each passage will be followed by a vocal performance (with piano accompaniment) of the corresponding scene from Floyd’s opera.

Admission is $5.  General seating.
