SOG "Opera Scene" Newsletter

Sarasota Opera Guild is a non-profit organization whose objectives are to:

  • Foster, promote and increase the appreciation and desire for opera in the community in conjunction with the Sarasota Opera Association,
  • Encourage and assist young singers, and
  • To sponsor projects to raise funds for the opera.

General Meetings

From September through May, members and guests are invited to attend SOG General Meetings. These monthly meetings, held on the third Tuesday of the month, begin with refreshments at 9:45 AM followed by a business meeting and specially selected musical program featuring outstanding musical selections presented by the Sarasota Opera Association and performed by Sarasota Opera Singers. Meetings are held in the Peterson Great Room of the Sarasota Opera House or in David Cohen Hall in the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center. For more information call (941) 355-5148.

Opera Prologues

In keeping with SOG's mission to encourage opera appreciation and understanding an annual lecture series is presented prior to the beginning of Sarasota Opera's new fall opera and Winter Opera Festival featuring music and discussion on each of the five productions: La traviata, Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci, The Magic Flute, Hansel and Gretel, and Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc).

Opera Prologues are held on Monday evenings in January at 7:15 p.m. at the Unity Church of Sarasota at 3023 Proctor Road and are followed by refreshments. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door, reservations are not needed.

Opera Salons

The summer months feature a variety of educational and social gatherings intended to give audiences a greater knowledge and insight to singers, opera composers, and opera librettos.  This summer SOG will feature some of our local singers including several of our youngest performers.

Events

A variety of small and large events are hosted by SOG and SOG members throughout the year.

  • New Member Coffees: SOG members open their homes to welcome new members.   New members can enjoy making new friends and learning more about SOG and Sarasota Opera.
  • Fundraisers: SOG hosts a wide variety of events.  All money raised by SOG helps support the activities of the Sarasota Opera through direct contributions to programs and artists scholarships.  Some of these events include the Poinsettia Luncheon and Fashion Show in December, the annual Sweetheart Luncheon and Reception in February, the Fall Party in November, and the Spring Fling in March.
