Sarasota Opera has suspended all performances of operas, concerts and events as of March 13, 2020 In response to the current Coronavirus situation and following guidance of the City of Sarasota and state health officials, Sarasota Opera has suspended all operas, concerts and events of the 2020 Winter Opera Festival. At the same time, we felt it was important to pay our artists for their full contract, and house them until they feel it's safe to travel back to their homes. All of them are freelance artists and have had most of their jobs cancelled for the next few months and will have little income for the foreseeable future. As you can imagine the financial impart to Sarasota Opera is immense. As a result of this closure and cancellations of future events to be held at the Sarasota Opera House, we estimate losing close to $1M in revenue. In addition, by offering credits towards next season, we will be impacting our income for next year as well. That is why we are asking you to consider donating any tickets for cancelled performances back to Sarasota Opera Relief Fund. By doing so, you are helping to limit the financial impact to the company and helping our artists weather this difficult period. Of course, we would greatly appreciate any other additional contributions that you might consider making. Ticket holders for canceled performances are encouraged to donate their tickets as a tax-deductible contribution to help Sarasota Opera through this crisis. For those donors who elect to support our Relief Fund by donating their tickets, we will be able to offer you the ability to view the four operas of our season, La bohème, Romeo and Juliet, The Elixir of Love and La Wally, over the internet for a limited time. These videos were single camera recordings, intended for archival purposes and are not up to the standard of commercial DVDs or the MET in HD recordings. However, they will give you the opportunity to see a performance as you might have seen it from a seat in our theater. All of the affected artists have waived their rights to additional compensation so that we may offer this to you. We are also arranging a benefit concert by many of our Principal Artists, to which ticket donors will be invited. Our artists will be donating their services for this concert, which will be scheduled once the crisis has passed. This is their way of thanking those donors who have helped Sarasota Opera through this crisis.
