Summary:
 Sarasota Opera, which owns its 1926 historic theater, typically produces four operas in repertory from January to March as well as a Fall mainstage and a Youth Opera production in October and November. Additionally, throughout the opera season a myriad of tours, special events and concerts are also produced. The facility is used year-round for arts groups and community events which are also a part of the position’s responsibilities.

Position Summary
The Calling Stage Manager is a seasonal independent contractor who, under the guidance of the Production Stage Manager, is responsible for running all rehearsals for and calling one of the four winter season operas. They are also key in facilitating communication amongst many artistic and production departments. The Calling Stage Manager supervises 2 Assistant Stage Managers and delegates various show responsibilities to them.

Position Summary: The Assistant Stage Manager is a seasonal independent contractor who, under the guidance of the Production Stage Manager/Calling Stage Manager, will assist with the documentation, preparation and running of all rehearsals and performances. They will also maintain a working score for assigned productions, and other duties related to stage management as assigned.

Summary:
 The primary responsibility of this position is maintaining the cleanliness of the Sarasota Opera Complex including the Steinwachs Artist Residences. They will also be responsible for helping set up for meeting and other events in the Sarasota Opera House.

Position Summary: The draper is a seasonal independent contractor who is responsible work directly with our resident costume designer to prepare garments for Sarasota Opera’s 2022 winter season. The winter season encompasses four main stage operas running in rotating rep. The draper plays a key role within a costume department that has a staff of fifteen. Including preparation of garments for assemble, fitting, leading alteration, and attending dress rehearsals as need.

Position Summary: The Arts Administration Intern is a seasonal independent contractor. The successful candidate will gain firsthand knowledge of the processes and operations of a professional “Rep” opera company. The fast paced, demanding work environment will help the candidate gain critical prioritization, organization, and collaboration skills.

Position Summary: The Rehearsal Administrator is a seasonal independent contractor who, under the guidance of the Artistic Administrator and the Director of Production, is responsible for the creation and distribution of the daily schedule. As well as supporting the operations of the Artistic department.

Wig and Makeup Staff

Wig and Makeup Staff

Position Summary: The Wig and Makeup staff is a seasonal independent contractor who is responsible for construction of wigs and application of both wigs and makeup for Sarasota Opera’s 2021-2022 season. The season encompasses four main stage opera productions. The wig and makeup staff will be involved with all aspects of the operation of the wig and makeup department. Including preparation of the wig and makeup shop for the season, building / styling wigs, application of wigs and makeup for each production, wig maintenance and end of season strike.

Auditions

Apprentice Artists Program

Applications are being accepted now through August 24, 2021 for Sarasota Opera's Winter 2022 Apprentice Program. The program runs January 5 - March 22, 2022 and includes work as chorus in the Winter Opera Festival productions of Puccini's Tosca, Donizetti's The Daughter of the Regiment, Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, and Verdi's Attila. Participants will have opportunities to participate in masterclasses, cover MainStage roles, perform in concerts, and other performance opportunities, as well as receive musical, dramatic, and language coaching.

Studio Artists Program

Singers who wish to audition for the Studio Artists Program must have:

  • Career potential as an operatic soloist
  • Minimum of three seasons experience with nationally recognized young artists programs
  • Have performed a minimum of three substantial operatic roles with orchestra
  • Impeccable professional references (references will be checked)
